A Redesigned Entry-Level Luxury SUV

BMW X1 is a sub-compact SUV that delivers an impressive driving agility and an impressive luggage volume at an affordable price, yet with the signature BMW DNA. Being the smallest of the BMW X Series, it is surprising that it yields more legroom for the rear seat occupants in its luxury sub-segment.

The 2023 BMW X1 has undergone a complete redesign, introducing a more captivating and stylish appearance compared to its predecessor. The front and rear have been restyled with new L-shaped blades, resulting in one of the brand’s best designs to date. Notably, the X1 has become longer, taller, and wider, offering a more spacious interior and increased cargo space, making it one of the roomiest SUVs in its class.

Advanced infotainment

Inside, the new X1 showcases BMW’s latest interior design, featuring a seamless glass enclosure housing a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch touchscreen. The center stack has been streamlined, consolidating climate controls and preset buttons into the infotainment system’s menus and submenus. The previous iDrive controller knob has been removed, granting more space and better storage options in the center console.

The X1 is equipped with cutting-edge infotainment and connectivity options. It now supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality as standard features. The inclusion of a blind-spot warning system with a safe-exit feature enhances safety when opening doors into approaching traffic. Additionally, features like augmented reality navigation, video recording for crashes and theft, and hands-free driving capability further elevate the X1’s tech offerings.

Powerful Performance

The new BMW X1 retains its reputation for excellent handling, providing a sporty and agile driving experience. Standard all-wheel drive ensures ample traction in various conditions. However, some drivers might find the brake pedal firm and touchy, lacking the refinement one would expect from a luxury SUV.

A Blend of affordability and luxury

The 2023 BMW X1 is an impressive combination of affordability and luxury. With its well-designed interior, advanced tech features, and agile driving dynamics, it delivers a driving experience comparable to more expensive BMW models. The X1’s turbocharged engine provides quick acceleration, and the spacious cabin offers ample room for passengers and cargo.

Entry-level luxury SUV

The BMW X1 is the most affordable crossover SUV in BMW’s lineup, but the driving experience and interior features go beyond its price point. The X1 impresses with its enjoyable driving dynamics and roomy interior. While the engine stop-start system and transmission tuning may have some drawbacks, they don’t overshadow the overall well-executed SUV.

Equipped with the M Sport package, the X1 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, making it quicker than rivals like the Audi Q3. The four-cylinder engine delivers smooth and strong power.

The X1’s handling shines around corners, providing plenty of grip and balance. The M Sport package’s summer tires and adaptive suspension further enhance its performance, while Sport mode tightens the steering, making it even more enjoyable on twisty roads. However, the engine stop-start system can be cumbersome and disruptive during city driving, affecting the overall driving experience.

The X1’s M Sport-specific seats are supportive but slightly firm. The M Sport adaptive suspension, while aiding handling, contributes to a somewhat bumpy ride during every day driving. Some comfort-minded buyers may prefer skipping the M Sport package to avoid these characteristics.

As an entry-level luxury crossover, the BMW X1 offers an interior that doesn’t compromise on space or features. Generous legroom and headroom in both rows provide comfortable seating for passengers. The car’s body proportions contribute to its ample cargo space of 26 cubic feet, which can be further expanded by folding the split rear seats.

The X1’s tech features are impressive, with the iDrive infotainment system continually improving. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, along with the optional Harman Kardon audio system, add to the appeal. However, the absence of ventilated seats and the reliance on touchscreen controls for climate settings may be less appealing to some drivers.

The 2023 BMW X1 impresses with its combination of affordability, luxury, and enjoyable driving dynamics. Its redesigned exterior and tech-forward interior provide a compelling package in the entry-level luxury SUV segment. While it may not be perfect, the X1 offers a well-rounded and practical choice for buyers seeking a luxurious driving experience without breaking the bank. In a nutshell, the X1 is an enjoyable and practical luxury subcompact SUV.
